British Airways is the flag carrier and the largest airline in the United Kingdom based on fleet size. The airline is based in Waterside near its main hub at London Heathrow Airport.
A British Airways Board was established by the United Kingdom government in January 1972 to manage the two nationalised airline corporations, British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA), and two smaller, regional airlines, Cambrian Airways, from Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines, from Newcastle upon Tyne. On 31 March 1974, all four companies were merged to form British Airways. On 8 April 2010, it was confirmed that British Airways and Iberia had signed an agreement to merge, making the combined operation the third largest commercial airline in the world by revenue. Shareholders of both carriers approved the deal on 29 November 2010. The newly merged company, known as International Airlines Group (IAG), was established in January 2011, although both airlines will continue to operate under their current brands.
British Airways is owner of CityFlyer Express since 1999.
British Airways is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance from 1 February 1999.
