Airbus Military was formally created in April 2009 by the integration of the former Military Transport Aircraft Division (MTAD) and Airbus Military Sociedad Limitada (AMSL) into Airbus. It was a business unit of Airbus, which was part of EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company) during the period 2009–2013.
In January 2014, the former EADS divisions Airbus Military, Astrium, and Cassidian were merged to form Airbus Defence and Space as division of Airbus SE.
The Airbus A310 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) is an aerial refueling tanker aircraft based on the civilian Airbus A310. It is designed as a dual-role air refueling tanker and cargo transport aircraft.

The Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) is an aerial refuelling tanker aircraft based on the civilian Airbus A330-200. It is designed as a dual-role air-to-air refuelling and transport aircraft. A version of the A330 MRTT, the EADS/Northrop Grumman KC-45 was proposed to the United States Air Force.
